How To Download Ovi Store Apps To PC

Ovi-Store-logo

Just like any other mobile manufacturer, Nokia also has an app store for its multimedia phones. Yes, you guessed it right, we are talking about Ovi Store from Nokia. Unfortunately, Nokia does not allow you to download Ovi Store apps to computer. However, there is a trick to download Ovi Store apps to computer, which can be later transferred to your Nokia phone.

Prerequisites:

  • Mozilla Firefox 3.6.10 or earlier.
  • PC running Windows OS.
  • Nokia Multimedia phone.
  • Nokia account.

Guide to download Nokia Ovi store application to PC:

  • Open Mozilla Firefox and go to Tools >> Add-ons.
  • Click on Get Add-ons tab and search for User Agent Switcher.
  • Install User Agent Switcher and restart Firefox.
  • Open Notepad and paste the following codes:

<useragentswitcher><useragent description=”Internet Explorer 7 (Windows Vista)” useragent=”Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0)” appcodename=”" appname=”Microsoft Internet Explorer” appversion=”4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0)” platform=”Win32″ vendor=”" vendorsub=”"/><useragent description=”Netscape 4.8 (Windows Vista)” useragent=”Mozilla/4.8 [en] (Windows NT 6.0; U)” appcodename=”" appname=”Netscape” appversion=”4.8 [en] (Windows NT 6.0; U)” platform=”Win32″ vendor=”" vendorsub=”"/><useragent description=”Opera 9.25 (Windows Vista)” useragent=”Opera/9.25 (Windows NT 6.0; U; en)” appcodename=”" appname=”Opera” appversion=”9.25 (Windows NT 6.0; U; en)” platform=”Win32″ vendor=”" vendorsub=”"/><useragent description=”Nokia 5230″ useragent=”Mozilla/5.0 (SymbianOS/9.4; U; Series60/5.0 Nokia5230/10.0.067; Profile/MIDP-2.1 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 ) AppleWebKit/413 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/413″ appcodename=”" appname=”" appversion=”" platform=”" vendor=”" vendorsub=”"/></useragentswitcher>

  • Replace all 5230 in the above code with the model number of your phone ( I tested this on Nokia 5230), like N97 for Nokia N97, or E71 for Nokia E71, and so on.
  • Save this file with .xml extension.
  • Now open Firefox and go to Tools >> Default User Agent >> Edit User Agents.
  • Click on Import.
  • Browse and add the above mentioned .xml file.
  • Now go to Tools >> Default User Agent and select your phone’s model number.
  • Open http://store.ovi.mobi/.

Download-Nokia-Maps-to-PC

Now, Firefox will work as the default browser of your phone, and you can download any Ovi Store file on your PC, and then transfer them to your phone via USB cable or Bluetooth.

Note: Once you complete downloading Ovi Store applications, change user agent back to default user agent, by going to Tools >> Default User Agent >> Default User Agent, else Firefox will keep behaving like your mobile phone’s browser.

Update: A lot of readers are facing problems while creating .xml file. Hence, i am posting an easier method to download Ovi Store apps to PC. Moreover, this method will work with all compatible Nokia phones.

Prerequisites and first three steps will remain same as in above method. Here is the new method:

  • Open General tab present on the right hand side of the webpage.
  • Look for Example User Agent header, and copy the codes next to it.
  • Go to Tools >> Default User Agent >> Edit User Agents.
  • Click New >> New User Agent.
  • Paste the above copied User Agent header under ‘User Agent’.
  • Enter Mobile name under ‘Description’, and delete all other entries.
  • Click ‘OK’ twice.
  • Now go to Tools >> Default User Agent and select your phone’s model number.
  • Open http://store.ovi.mobi/.

Bingo! you can now download Ovi Store apps to your PC, and transfer them to your phone.

kundan says:

yaar can edit XML file for Nokia E5 as i am getting error”incorrect format ” while importing file in Mozilla.

varun says:

@Kundan I tried to edit the codes but failed. However, i found another way out. Here it is, instead of loading User Agent header(the codes) via .xml file. Go to Tools >> Default User Agent >> Edit User Agents… >> New >> New User Agent.
Here paste the following codes under “User Agent”:
Mozilla/5.0 (SymbianOS/9.3; Series60/3.2 NokiaE5-00/042.007; Profile/MIDP-2.1 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 ) AppleWebKit/525 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 BrowserNG/7.2.6.2 3gpp-gba

Also, enter Nokia E5-00 under description and click OK (twice).
Now, you do not need to create and import .XML file which i told in the article above. All other steps will remain same.
If you still face any issue, do write back.

zerglings says:

HI Varun, i triedl the xml method, and it says it’s not the right format, then i tried to new user agent, but im not sure the code is right. when i go to the ovi store, it says “We’re sorry
Ovi Store is currently not available for your device.
Please check back as new Nokia devices are being added frequently.” please help me.

Thansk

varun says:

@zerglings hi zerglings, to start with, you haven’t mentioned your phone’s model no., else i would have tried it myself. Looking at the error you have mentioned, it seems that at the moment Ovi Store is not compatible with your Nokia phone. So, i will suggest you to play wait and watch game. And yes, i will soon be updating this post with a new method, which will work with all compatible Nokia phones, as xml method is limited to select few. So, keep an eye out for it.

Dingle_Berry says:

Hi, i was wondering if u could supply the code for the Nokia N97 Mini. Because i used “Mozilla/5.0 (SymbianOS/9.4; U; Series60/5.0 Nokia N97Mini/10.0.067; Profile/MIDP-2.1 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 ) AppleWebKit/413 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/413″ and recognised me as a Nokia N97, sadly the format is not the same and cannot use the software =( Thanks in advance.

Kilroy238 says:

Thanks for the instructions but I’m having the same problem of “Ovi Store is currently not available for your device.”

I’m using the new N8. I’ve found 2 user codes and manually added both. Neither have worked.

Mozilla/5.0 (Symbian/3; Series60/5.2 NokiaN8-00/00.0.000; Profile/MIDP-2.1 Configuration/CLDC-1.1) AppleWebKit/525 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 BrowserNG/7.2.5.1 3gpp-gba
Mozilla/5.0 (Symbian/3; Series60/5.2 NokiaN8-00/010.021; Profile/MIDP-2.1 Configuration/CLDC-1.1) AppleWebKit/525 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 BrowserNG/7.2.6 3gpp-gba

Would really appreciate some help on this. I live in China and can’t download anything decent or anything I can read for that matter from China ovi. Even things like N8 skype from Ovi are not available here. That alone will save me some serious scratch.

TIA for anything you can do to help me out.

nez says:

Hi,

This is great. But i have a small problem, after i transfer the file onto my phone, and try to open it- it says file type not supported. How do I install this on my phone? I use a Nokia X6

Mahedi Hasan says:

Hi

I am using 5233. and I have tried the first system mentioned avobe but failed. It said “the file was not the right format”. So please help me out with the second system.

Thanks

Razor says:

Working Method : http://xssaccess.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=58 …..Full tutorial with screenshots…..worked for ME …… :)

varun says:

@Dingle_Berry Wait for the second method, it’s simpler, and works for all compatible Nokia phones.

varun says:

@nez If the file type is .JAD, then there is no way of installing it on your phone, as JAD files are nothing more than plain text files.
But if you are talking about .sis.dm files, then there is a way of installing them. I will post a complete guide for it in 1 or 2 days.

iqbal hussain says:

hi, i am iqbal hussain. i am in a problem that is after save that file with .xml extension i get a message like this
c:\ documents and setting\ kamran\desktop\.xml extension.txt
this file contains charcters in unicode format which will be lost if you save this file as an ANSI encode text file. to keep the unicode information, click cancel below then click on of the unicode options from the unicoding drop list. continue?
for this problem i can’t carry on . so pls solve the problem

varun says:

@iqbal hussain When you are saving the file, you will notice an option named “Encoding” (near Save button). Simply select “Unicode”, instead of “ANSI” from it’s drop down list.

Ariz says:

For Varun
I am using Nokia 5800Xpress Music .I am neither able to create an xml.extension type nor the way suggested by you to Kundan.
Please send me the full steps involved in the process

varun says:

@Ariz The steps i have mentioned to Kundan are specifically meant for E5-00. For all the other handsets, i have updated the post with a newer and simpler method, so read that and don’t forget to give the feedback.

GeoR says:

I am using an x2 and i can access the site using the second method..but i cant seem to save anything that i can actaully use. When i click download, i can only save .jad files and not the .jar or anything, and for wallpapers i can only save them as .dm…
Please help
Thankyou

ankush says:

I am usnig n8, on which i get a message to install THE OVI STORE APPLICATION, FOR MU DEVICE. what needs to be done to get ovi on my pc.

Kilroy238 says:

I never did get any help on this but I found out about another way I wanted to pass on even easier than using User Agent.

Log into your Ovi Store account and make sure the correct phone is selected. Browse to the app you want and hit send to a friend. Look in the URL and replace “send-to-friend” with download. Then it will save to your default location. Move to your Nokia and install.

This was a huge help to me and have had no problems.

guweh says:

@Kilroy238 I hope this code will work on your N8, it’s work for me

Kilroy238 says:

@guweh Ummmm what code? ;)

varun says:

@GeoR If you facing problem in installing .sis.dm or .dm files on your phone then below is the link for the guide to convert them into .sis files.
http://www.techlivez.com/2010/10/how-to-convert-sis-dm-dm-files-to-sis-files/
This should work for you.

Kobi says:

@Kilroy238 I am also in China and I will receive my N8 in the next few days. I noticed OVI China has no good apps. By using your method, am I able to get apps such as Angry Bird? And other apps from OVI’s main site?

Kilroy238 says:

@Kobi Yes totally. I’ve never used Symbian before but finding ways to install apps from back home is pretty easy. Getting free apps is easiest.
1: log in OVI store and select you phone
2: go into the application that want to download
3: press send to friend
4: in the address bar replace (( send-to-friend )) then type ((download))
5: that show to you save as window save it in the place that you want to save in it
6: use notepad ++
7: delete 4 sentence in the top ((include space ))
8: save the file
9: rename file extension from((sis.dm.)) to ((sis.))
10 : install the application in the phone.

Per Varun you can also look here for more instructions and links.
http://www.techlivez.com/2010/10/how-to-convert-sis-dm-dm-files-to-sis-files/

But this is only good for free apps and demo’s.

Since I understand the problem your facing with finding apps I will also suggest looking at http://www.symbiantalk.net/index.php.

guweh says:

@Kilroy238 I apologize, this is the code, it works on my computer

guweh says:

@Kilroy238 I don’t know why the code I put in this forum not show up (may be it’s too long?), you can add this code specialy for Nokia N8:

guweh says:

@Kilroy238 this the code for Nokia N8:

guweh says:

@Kilroy238 I don’t know why the code is no show up in this respone message? :(

Kilroy238 says:

Thanks for trying but it doesn’t matter the way I am using works great.

how to download ovi store applications for pc and for nokia 2690…………….

varun says:

Vikash, Ovi Store currently does not have any app for your device, and likewise it does not supports your device.
Read kilroy238′s method to download Ovi Store apps to PC, it’s simpler.

Muhammad Waqas says:

When i try to save my xml file it show some errors regarding unicode, i dont know how to fix that, can anyone help me?

Ismail says:

I downloaded application to my pc but when I transfered it to mobile phone it requires installation with gprs.why??

varun says:

@Muhammad Waqas When you are saving the file, you will notice an option named “Encoding” (near Save button). Simply select “Unicode”, instead of “ANSI” from it’s drop down list.

varun says:

@Ismail IS it a .JAD file?

ismail says:

Yes it is .jad file

varun says:

@Ismail Here is what you need to do:
1. Once you download the desired .jad file, open it with Notepad++.
2. Copy the URL next to “MIDlet-Jar-URL”.
3. Paste that URL in Address bar of your browser and hit enter.
4. Save the file.
5. Transfer this file to your Nokia phone and go through the installation process.
Done.

Ismail says:

Thanks a lot …

ismail says:

@varun i installed .jad. but i have .sis.dm files how to install this type??

John says:

Hi, Varun. Thanks for the trick. However, I encountered another problem. When I enter store.ovi.mobi, I encounter the following message: Download the Ovi Store Application for faster browsing of apps, games, videos and more!

All I can download is Ovi Store Application!

Faith says:

Varun, I encountered the same problem with John. :(

varun says:

Try going to store.ovi.com instead of store.ovi.mobi.

John says:

Tried that too. No joy. Same message.

Perhaps if I could have the user agent for Ovi Store application? But how? If it was a PC application, I had no trouble. But that’s a mobile phone application…

Or perhaps if there was a Nokia emulator application…

Mrs._Depp says:

Hi Varun I did the stuff for the second step the easier one but when I download http://store.ovi.mobi/. it says that there is no Nokia phone detected what do I do now? Please any help would be good.

Mrs._Depp says:

I forgot to say that I have a Nokia Nuron 5230 and I uninstalled Ovi Store from my computer and tried to download it like that but it installed it on my phone again. Witch is not ok because I still need the internet. Can anyone help me on how to do this?

varun says:

Don’t u think that will make the entire process very complicated? Everyone will not be able to understand that either.
Have you read the method mentioned by Kilroy238? If not, then give it a try.

Mrs._Depp says:

I have done what Kilroy238 said but at the end when I try to save the file in the option -SAVE AS A TYPE: it does not give me the option to save it in .sis format or (Software Installation Script) and it does not let me put something on my own. So how can I save it? I have a Nokia 5230

varun says:

Simply save the file in whatever format it is. After that follow these instructions to convert it into .sis file.

If it is a .jad file:
1. Open it with Notepad++.
2. Copy the URL next to “MIDlet-Jar-URL”.
3. Paste that URL in Address bar of your browser and hit enter.
4. Save the file.
5. Transfer this file to your Nokia phone and go through the installation process.

If the file is .dm/.sis.dm then click this link for instructions
http://www.techlivez.com/2010/10/how-to-convert-sis-dm-dm-files-to-sis-files/

Mrs._Depp says:

Probably I am doing things wrong but nothing works to download stuff from Ovi store to my PC. And nobody answers my questions on the correct way.

All works until you click on link to ovi store, then wants to download ovi store (http://store.ovi.mobi/default/index/clientsplash) install to my pc and will not access the website

Shuvamoy says:

Guys you dont need any xml file or headache to download that on PC.

1. Just log in to ovi store.
2. Select the free app which you want to download.
3. Click send to friend option. on clicking that option you will get an url like this “http://store.ovi.com/content/21777/send-to-friend”

4. Just change the send-to-friend to download eg change the url to “http://store.ovi.com/content/21777/download”

5. Press enter and enjoy the PC download.

Remember you must log in first to do all these. If found helpful do let me a word of thanks.

Enjoy

Also one more thing I seen that when I am copying the .sis file in phone memory of Nokia C7 , it is not allowing me to copy saying that phone memory is write protected.

Sirwilly says:

@ shuvamoy:
That really worked like a charm!
Thanks a lot…I’m using Nokia N8 and I just downlooaded SnapTu using your very simple strategy as I couldn’t locate the user guide in general tab.

Sirwilly says:

@ Admin:
May be you should test Shuvamoy’s strategy and add it to the main article. Thanks a lot for your page—it’s a life-saver!
