Blu-ray and HD-DVD created so much hype when they were introduced. But HD-DVD died a monotonous death, and Blu-ray emerged as the winner. Now, Blu-ray is again in the news, as Sharp has made a substantial jump in the field of disc storage capacity. This new Blu-ray disc, VR-100BR1, is capable of storing 128GB of data on single-write discs, while re-writable disc can manage 100GB data at a time.

This increased storage capacity is the result of four layers, instead of just two. This disc will be first launched in Japan, with a price tag of $60. There are no words about the “rest of the world” release.
