Universal Charging Socket for Mobile Phones by 2012

February 18th, 2009 by Madhur

By 2012, all the mobile phones will come with a Universal Charging Socket allowing same charger to be used for all mobile phones. All the major key mobile phone industry players have agreed to fit phones with same power socket by 2012.

The industry group GSMA has said that handsets would have a micro USB interface which is already used to transfer pictures from digital camera to computers. All the major companies like Nokia, LG, Motorola, Samsung and Sony Ericsson have signed for the change. Mobile operators such as AT&T, Orange, Telefonica, T-Mobile and Vodafone are also part of this initiative.

If this is successfully implemented, mobile phones would ship without a charger and a plug as everyone will have one. This could also be energy efficient as it would lead to less waste and could save energy.
