India Finally Gets 3G

August 1st, 2008 by Ankit Duseja

Vodafone 3GThe much awaited 3G technology is finally coming to India. Since past year, 3G was being in talks & the Indian Government lately but has finally introduced 3G spectrum in India. Currently 60Mhz of spectrum is available. One slot is being alloted to BSNL, MTNL. The other part will be soon auctioned and will also be open for international operators too.

The auction winner will get up to 20Mhz of spectrum. Airtel, Vodafone are expected to take active part in auction as well. Three slots of the 3G spectrum will be alloted to CDMA players. Reliance Telecom is expected to be the major national bidder followed by TATA in CDMA quota.

MTNL will operate in Delhi & Mumbai while BSNL will take care of rest of the parts. BSNL CEO said, BSNL would start its 3G services within six months. The prices will surely be high in starting years as what expected but at least we can say “India finally has 3G”! :)

The other news is they have also passed number portability. Number portability means that you can switch to other operators network without losing your current number. However this is not going to be very soon. Probably it will get in action in mid of 2009. Lets hope more spectrum gets available and the prices to go down till next year.
