"I seriously doubt that 160W can handle such a system, that might be the idle scenario."

A lot of people do wildly overestimate the power consumption of their computers. I agree that 160W seems unrealisitic for this PC though!

Modern AMD CPUs use around 40-65 W, Intel use more (around 100 W I believe).

Disk drives use around 15W, DVDs around 20-30W, sound cards around 20W, RAM is in the 10 W region.

Mostly it comes down to the graphics card. This poster has dual 8800GTs, which I would expect to use well over 200W under load. Lower end cards use significantly less however, and it is not unusual for a desktop to consume around 160W under load. (See the charts at http://forum.ncix.com/forums/index.php?threadid=1258302&mode=showthread. )

Still, peak power usage will spike above this, and so you do need a power supply with ample capacity to spare.

@Andreas
Thanks for the info about mITX

"My sys with E8400 2GB Ram 2x 8800GT take under fire about 160W"

I seriously doubt that 160W can handle such a system, that might be the idle scenario. Anyways you just can't use a 160W rating SMPS for such a system, it has to be more than 450+. Asus Eee Box is specially optimized for low power and performance in a small package so it has to be better.

and who knows once the atom optimized chipsets starts pouring in,we might build a similar counterpart ourself having a warranty of atleast 3 years.

I have the original MB from Intel with the same CPU and Bridge 945GC & 2GB Ram & 1HDD it need about 25W in Idle mode and unter heavy duty about 50W.

The CPU is realy great but the Chipset is bullshit. It takes 90% off all the power.

"It runs on a meagre 20 Watts, imagine the power savings ( whats the rating of your PSU ? generally 400W+ )"
The 400W is only the output and not the input power !

My sys with E8400 2GB Ram 2x 8800GT take under fire about 160W.

Kontron will produce Q4/2008 2 new mini ITX boards with the Atom CPU. KTUS15/mITX 1.1 (1.1GHz) & KTUS15/mITX 1.6 (1.6GHz). These boards have a new bridge chip wich is more efficent then the 945GC Chipset. So its a bit better to wait until kontron released their mITX

Wow! Looks good, good price, all the hardware you'd need, and you can mount it behind your LCD! With a wireless mouse and keyboard, you'd pretty much have a wire-free work environment! A++
