Browser Sync gets lost in version jungle

June 15th, 2008 by Ankit Duseja

googlesync-installed1Google Browser Sync, a very very useful extension and one of my favourite Firefox extension has been discontinued by Google & they are not going to release this so useful plugin for Firefox 3. I’m really sad to deliver this news that the release of Firefox 3 will be last day of this plugin. So if you upgrade to Firefox 3 then you will never see this plugin again. Lifehacker reports that this project has been discontinued because Googlers are busy with other things & don’t have time to rebuild it for Firefox 3. Here is what Googlers replied to a query:

Thanks for trying out Google Browser Sync and for all of your feedback. It was a tough call, but we decided to phase out support for Browser Sync. Since the team has moved on to other projects that are keeping them busy, we don’t have time to update the extension to work with Firefox 3 or to continue to maintain it.

For those of you who want to continue to use Firefox 2, we’ll maintain support for old versions of Google Browser Sync through 2008. After that, we can recommend a few other products that scratch a similar itch. We hope that one of them works for you:

Mozilla Weave [labs.mozilla.com] from Mozilla Labs—Offers bookmark and history synchronization across computers.

Google Toolbar for Firefox [toolbar.google.com]—Store your bookmarks online and access them from any computer online.

Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer [addons.mozilla.org]—Synchronizes your bookmarks across all computers where it is installed.

Regards,
The Google Team

Browser Sync was developed by Googlers in the 20% free time they get for experimenting with new things. But now they are busy with another project so they are discontinuing this one.

However alternatives are available but the ease of working with Browser Sync can’t be overlooked.

I never even imagined that this will be the last week, we are enjoying Google Browser Sync. I will really miss this plugin. :(

Just move to Opera. With Opera 9.5 you get Opera Link that synchronizes not only between Opera desktop versions, but also Opera Mini. It is a much better solution.
