February 14th, 2008 by Shashank

Spice telecom has announced a really cheap handset for $20 which is touted to be the world’s cheapest mobile phone at the Barcelona’s Mobile world congress, the world’s biggest telecoms conference. Speaking about the phone Spice Chairman, BK Modi said, “The People’s Phone is a world first. It will be available to the consumer for under $20, making it accessible to a vast number of people who currently cannot afford the expense of a mobile handset.”

Spice is also showcasing a mobile which works on a DVD player(releasing in June), looks like Indian companies have understood lately the massive opportunities available in the lower segment market in India, we have already seen Tata’s Rs 1 Lakh car, HCL and Zenith’s ultra low cost PC’s and there’s more to come.

Spice’s Modi also talked about its plans to introduce more low cost mobiles ranging from $5 to $10. How they are gonna to reduce the cost of handsets? well these mobile will not come equipped with a display screen.
