February 20th, 2007 by Shashank

Now the users will be able to make “unlimited use” of the HD DVD platform with the AnyDVD HD software. SlySoft launched the first version of its HD DVD cracking software designed to let consumers decrypt HD DVD movie discs and rip them to a hard drive.

How it Works:

The AnyDVD HD software cracks the Advanced Access Content System (AACS), a specification for managing content stored on the next generation HD DVDs.
The companies, including IBM, Microsoft Relevant Products/Services, Intel, Panasonic, and Sony Relevant Products/Services, developed the spec and license it to manufacturers in an effort to protect video content.
But now the protection has been broken..

Particle energy doubled in just one meter ..

February 15th, 2007 by Shashank

Imagine a car that accelerates from zero to sixty in 250 feet, and then rockets to 120 miles per hour in just one more inch.

The electrons first traveled two miles through the linear accelerator at SLAC, gaining 42 billion electron volts (or GeV) of energy. Then they passed through a 33-inch long (84-centimeter) plasma chamber and picked up another 42 GeV of energy. Like an afterburner on a jet engine, the plasma provides extra thrust.

The plasma chamber is filled with lithium gas. As the electron bunch passes through the lithium, the front of the bunch creates plasma. This plasma leaves a wake that flows to the back of the bunch and shoves it forward, giving electrons in the back more energy.

The experiment created one of the biggest acceleration gradients ever achieved. The gradient is a measure of how quickly particles amass energy. In this case, the electrons hurtling through the plasma chamber gained 3,000 times more energy per meter than usual in the accelerator.

Rope Ascender by MIT STUDENT.

February 15th, 2007 by Shashank

This year winner of the Lemelson-MIT Student Prize, a $30,000 award for invention awarded to a student at the school every year.

Nathan Ball, a mechanical-engineering graduate student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, led a team that has invented a motorized pulley that will let paramedics and firefighters zip up the side of buildings sort of like Spider-Man.

Ball’s Atlas Powered Rope Ascender can pull a firefighter loaded down with 80 to 100 pounds of equipment up a 30-story building in 30 seconds. Trudging up the stairs weighed down with equipment that heavy can take six to eight minutes.

Atlas exploits the capstan effect, which lets the rope grip tighter each time it wraps around a cylinder. As the grip tightens, more weight can be applied to the line.

The Altas, about the size of a handheld power tool, can lift a 250-pound load more than 600 feet into the air at nearly 10 feet per second on one battery charge.

The 23-year-old Ball has also invented a needle-free method for injecting medicines. It will undergo bovine tests soon, which is based on a laser-assisted delivery device.
